Cut & Fit
All manufactures have their own way of classifying the cut and fit of their jeans. Here is a quick guide with descriptions of the most common cut and fit terms for designer jeans. The term 'fit' refers to the looseness or tightness of the jeans and the term 'cut' refers to the shape of the jeans.
Women
Boot cut
Have a firmer cut around the lower legs.
Boyfriend or Boy cut
Great for women with larger thighs. Wear with flats or make more feminine with a pair of heels.
Wide Leg/ Flared or Bell bottoms
Best suits flat tummies and long legs. Huge flares can be too overwhelming on shorter legs. Wear wedges for a full 70's look.
High-waisted
Hipster jeans have been the preferred style of jeans among young women for the last decade but high-waisted jeans are making a comeback. The latest denim trend is skinny and high waisted. 18th Amendment 'Lollabrigida' are a great example.
Hip-huggers or Hipsters
Hipsters sit very comfortably on your hips. They look great on flat tummies and bottoms. When you try them on bend over and make sure you're not showing any love handles or your butt.
Skinny or Straight-leg
Best for petite figures which is why celebrities flaunt them regularly. But if you don't feel your backside is as glamorous as the celebs you can wear an oversized T-shirt or long jacket over your skinny leg jeans. For mini petite size women pair your skinny jeans with some ballerina flats or a small pair of heels. Skinny leg jeans look hot on long, lean and narrow silhouettes with a pair of boots. Clean colour skinny leg jeans are the preferred cut of the season.
Black Skinny
Black skinny leg jeans are a modern alternative to black pants. Favourite celebrity styles are to wear them rock style with a vintage tee and leather jacket, or pretty them up with a bright colour or a ruffle shirt and blazer.
Classic Cut
Are reasonably lose fitting but with tapered legs and sit around the mid waist mark.
Men
Regular/ Traditional/Classic Cut
Regular jeans have a slim but not tight fit on the bottom and thigh, and have a tapered leg.
Western Cut
Western jeans are a similar fit to classic jeans because they have a slim fitting bottom and thigh, but instead of a normal leg they have a boot leg cut. The boot leg cut simply means the jeans are tighter around the bottom of the leg.
Loose Fit
Jeans are looser on the bottom and thigh by about an inch. They have a tapered leg but it is a bit looser than the classic cut. Loose or relaxed fit jeans are the most popular for men because they generally feel more relaxed in looser fitting jeans and they allow men to move more and be active.
Baggy Fit
Baggy jeans are really loose in the bottom, thighs and legs. Baggy jeans were the rage in the 90's but are not so common any more.
Tight Skinny
The latest trend is a tight fit throughout the leg. Tight jeans are particularly popular with teenagers and young adult males. This generation is currently in the midst of a jeans revolution. Skinny jeans are a part of the younger generation's culture and way of expressing themselves and making their own fashion standards.
